As regulations grow increasingly more complicated, individuals who have successfully completed accredited master’s degree programs in Nebraska and other states will find themselves more in demand in the job market. An accounting degree opens the door to many opportunities and accounting skills are important to every business in the world. Accounting is used in government, private industry and in non-profit agencies.

Over the past 20 years, the accounting industry has changed dramatically in response to technology, corporation downsizing and changes to government regulations as well as tax laws. This means the demand for accountants has also grown. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, accounting positions are expected to grow by 10 percent, faster than other types of industries. The average pay for an accountant in the United States was $68,150 in 2016.

In 2016, there were 8,700 accountants and auditors employed in Nebraska, earning $66,730 per year. There are also other positions available in the accounting field including budget analysts, credit analysts, financial analysts and personal financial advisors. In Nebraska in 2016, personal financial advisors earned an average of $109,110 per year.

In most states, at least 150-credit hours are required to sit for the CPA examination. Since most bachelor’s degree programs are only 120-credit hours, students opt to earn their master’s degree in accounting to qualify them to sit for the exam.
