Increasingly complicated accounting regulations have created a much larger job market for individuals who successfully complete master’s in accounting degree programs in New Jersey. As states grapple with growing technology that makes fraud easier, as well as added protections against white collar crime, the need for people who understand the complexities of the accounting world have grown as well.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2016,there were 36,640 accountants and auditors in New Jersey, earning an average of $88,940 per year. This is higher than the national average salary of $68,150 per year. In addition to accountants and auditors, there are other positions available to those who successfully complete master’s degree programs in New Jersey. New Jersey City University
Accounting Department
The Accounting Department at New Jersey City University prepares students for careers in the accounting industry. The school offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in the accounting profession, including a graduate certificate in professional management accounting. The department uses degree maps to plan an academic path that is created for each individual student.
M.S. in Accounting
This Master of Science in Accounting degree program in New Jersey, offered through the Department of Accounting at New Jersey City University, provides students with advanced education in the accounting field. Students develop critical thinking, writing and analytical skills. The program provides students with the 150-credit hours necessary to sit for the CPA examination. Students must have completed a bachelor’s degree and have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher in undergraduate studies or provide official GMAT scores for admission. Students develop the skills necessary to make informed decisions, evaluate alternative solutions, communicate effectively and resolve complex issues related to finances.

Rider University
College of Business Administration
The College of Business Administration at Rider University prepare students for leadership roles in their chosen career. Students develop the skills that allow them to turn their dreams into realities. Students are able to gain hands-on experience through partnerships with local agencies, organizations and businesses. The online Master of Accounting ranks at number seven nationally by the Accounting Degree Review.
MAcc – Master of Accountancy
The Master of Accountancy program offered through the College of Business Administration at Rider University helps students develop the technical competencies and credit hours necessary to sit for the CPA examination. Courses are taught in small sections by faculty engaged in research into their fields. The program is offered in evening and afternoon sessions to allow students flexibility as they work toward their degree.
Online Master of Accountancy
Specifically designed for accounting professionals, the online Master of Accountancy program offered through the College of Business Administration at Rider University provides students with additional knowledge as well as the necessary credits to sit for the CPA examination. Students may enter this master’s in accounting degree program in New Jersey through a cohort program that begins each fall, or the flexible program that allows them to enter the program at any time. The cohort program follows a prescribed course for 16 months. Students are guaranteed placement in classes each semester. The flexible program allows students to work at their own pace on a part-time basis, allowing them to meet work, family and social obligations as they complete their degree. The online program follows the same rigorous curriculum as the traditional classroom program.

Rutgers University – Camden
School of Business
The School of Business at Rutgers University’s Camden campus is the premier institution for both graduate and undergraduate studies. Professional Master of Accounting (PMAc) Program
The Professional Master of Accounting program offered through the School of Business at Rutgers University provides professionals the opportunity to advance in a current career or move into a new career using flexible formats designed for working adults. The Master’s in Accounting degree program in New Jersey is a 16-month accelerated program with no classes required during peak tax season. Classes meet on Saturday and are taught by highly-qualified faculty. A four-part CPA methodology is built into the program which allows students to meet the 150-credit hour requirement to sit for the exam.

Master of Accountancy in Financial Accounting
The Master of Accountancy with a concentration in financial accounting offered through Rutgers Business School at the Newark campus of Rutgers University is designed to prepare recent accounting graduate the necessary credits to sit for the CPA and CMA examination. The program is a 30-credit accounting program offered in a hybrid format that combines both in-person and online courses. Students do not have to have prior accounting experience and there is no GMAT requirement for students with an undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher. This Master in Accounting degree program in New Jersey provides students with networking opportunities through partnerships with major firms in the area, as well as concentrations in audit analytics and CMA-based courses.
Master of Accountancy in Governmental Accounting Program
The Master of Accountancy in Governmental Accounting Program is ranked in the top 20 in the country as one of the best online graduate business programs by US News & World Report. The program is the first and only of its type to be offered entirely online. Students are not required to provide GMAT scores and in-state tuition is extended to all students regardless of where they live. The program is designed for students who wish to enter careers in the government or non-profit sector. The program focuses on developing graduates with strong communication skills and provides them with experiences in leveraging and designing information systems focused on finance. Students learn using real-world, global experiences in the form of case studies, team projects, research opportunities and internships. Students have the opportunity to learn in the Center for Governmental Accounting Education & Research as well.
Master of Accountancy in Professional Accounting Program
The Master of Accountancy in Professional Accounting Program offered at the Rutgers Newark campus is designed for students who do not have a professional background in accounting, but are seeking a degree in accounting other than an MBA. Students with an undergraduate degree in other business disciplines or in arts and sciences can be prepared for a successful transition into accounting. The program balances theory and practice, allowing students to shift into a new career easily. If students wish to sit for the CPA examination, the program satisfies requirements for them to do so.
Master of Accountancy in Taxation Program
The Master of Accountancy in Taxation program at Rutgers University Newark campus is ranked in the top 50 Master’s in Taxation programs and is a flexible degree designed for professionals. Students collaborate with the Rutgers University-Newark School of Law in order to gain an understanding of taxation and the law. Most classes are taken on-campus while some may be offered on the New Brunswick campus to make it easier for students in that area to attend classes.
MBA in Professional Accounting Program
The MBA in Professional Accounting Program is a 14-month program and a certificate in Audit Analytics can be earned by adding just one course. Students gain an understanding of the dynamic global economy and are qualified to sit for the CPA examination upon graduation. The program is the first of its kind and is designed to create business leaders. It is designed for students who hold bachelor’s degrees or higher in arts and sciences, or in a business field other than accounting. Students gain strong management skills with a strong emphasis on teamwork and gain real-world knowledge through case studies and team projects.
Master of Public Administration/Master of Accountancy in Governmental Accounting
The dual Master of Public Administration and Master of Accountancy in Governmental Accounting is designed for students who hope to obtain careers in public administration and finance. Students are able to broaden their technical skills in both areas and gain a strong understanding of subjects like auditing, budgeting, public finance as well as accounting. Increased accountability, transparency and effectiveness are stressed as part of the curriculum. Students must apply separately to the two programs and must identify their desire to enter the dual degree program.
Accelerated Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science/Master of Business Administration in Professional Accounting Program
Undergraduate students are provided the opportunity to combine their liberal arts degree with the MBA in Professional Accountancy and graduate from both programs with just two additional months of study. Students complete the undergraduate core and requirements for the major during the first three years of study. The fourth year is completed at the Rutgers School of Business where students complete the 14-month MBA-PA program. The first two semesters of graduate work are used as electives to complete the bachelor’s requirements. This results in lower tuition costs and qualifies students to sit for the CPA examination upon graduation.

Stillman School of Business Department of Accounting and Taxation
The Department of Accounting and Taxation at the Stillman School of Business at Seton Hall University provides students with the fundamentals of accounting through a sequence of specialized instruction in theory, reporting, measurement and control. Students are also provided instruction in auditing, taxes and systems in order to prepare them for careers as Certified Public Accountants.
Accounting (M.S.A.C.)
The Master’s in Accounting degree program in New Jersey offered at Seton Hall University prepares students for a wide range of career paths in the accounting field. The program is designed for students who do not have an undergraduate degree in accounting but who wish to sit for the CPA examination. The degree may be completed on campus or online in just 12 months while part-time students normally complete the program in two years.
