Finance and Accounting Programs at Indiana Wesleyan University

Indiana Wesleyan University offers a number of finance and accounting degree programs for students today. The most basic of those is an Associate of Science (AS) in Accounting. Designed for those who have no accounting or finance experience, this program allows students to take courses that will later count towards a bachelor’s degree. Many students transfer into the full accounting program through the bridge version of this program. It includes courses such as Foundations of Lifelong Learning, Basic Economics, Business Taxation and Accounting Principles I and II.
A Bachelor of Arts in Accounting is also available from Indiana Wesleyan University. This program includes 12 courses that are the accounting and business common core. Marketing Principles, Microeconomics, Business Law and Business Statistics are some of the courses in that core. Students who completed the accounting bridge can skip some of these classes. They will also take five required courses, including Federal Income Tax I and Managerial Cost Accounting. An online bachelor’s program is also available. The online program starts nearly every month. Another choice for undergrads is the university’s Bachelor of Arts in Finance. Though it includes the same business core, it features other classes such as Investments, Financial Management, and Real Estate Investment and Management.
Indiana Wesleyan University offers an online Master of Business Administration (MBA) with a specialization in Personal Financial Planning as well as a Master of Science in Accounting. Students learn how to interpret financial data, analyze financial documents/records, communicate in a professional way and understand the legal and ethical issues in the accounting industry. This is a cohort program that gives students up to 26 months to finish their degrees. They take online classes and can register for courses that meet once a week on an Indiana Wesleyan University campus. Those courses include Corporate Taxation, Forensic Accounting and Fraud Examination, Financial Accounting Theory and Issues and Accounting Information Systems and Control.
About Indiana Wesleyan University
Indiana Wesleyan University is a private university that dates back to the late 19th century. Founded 1920, the university took over the campus of a university that failed. That school served as the Marion Normal Institute and the Marion Normal College before merging with another school and then shutting down. The Wesleyan Methodist Church and its Indiana Conference decided to acquire that campus and open a new school there that would emphasize Methodist principles. When classes started in 1920, the school used the name Marion College. Both Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science programs were available during the early days. The curriculum would later grow to include many different graduate programs too.
Also known as IWU, the university now offers nearly 90 majors for undergrads. While its theology and religious studies programs are popular, students also like its education and business options. U.S. News and World Report choose IWU as one of the best schools in the Midwest and ranked it as high as number 17 on that annual list. The Young American Foundation named it one of the nation’s most conservative colleges too. IWU has a College of Adult and Professional Studies with programs designed specifically for adult learners. It offers bridge options for those who want to go onto a bachelor’s program and awards prior learning credits based on their knowledge and experience. More than 13,000 students sign up for IWU classes every year today.
Indiana Wesleyan University Accreditation Details
IWU has the accreditation that allows students to easily transfer credits from one program to another university and to transfer in their past credits. That accreditation comes from the Higher Learning Commission (HLC), formerly known as the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCACS). As a religious institution, the university also has accreditation from the Commission on Accrediting of the Association of Theological Schools (CAATS).
Indiana Wesleyan University Application Requirements
IWU has different requirements for students based on the programs they want to study. Those applying to an AS program should have either a GED or a high school diploma. The university asks for proof of either and for transcripts from any of the colleges or schools that students attended. Students who want to get credit for any of their past work should also take a prior learning assessment. This will determine how many credits they get. Students applying to any of the university’s bachelor’s programs must have at least 60 credits of courses already completed. They can submit their transcripts from other schools, but IWU does not require transcripts from those who took classes there. Students should also submit the undergrad application online.
Students can only enroll in the university’s MS in Accounting program if they have a bachelor’s or graduate degree from a university with regional accreditation. Those who have a 2.5-grade point average in college may receive full acceptance. Students with a lower GPA can enroll on a probationary basis. Once students complete the online application, they can submit their official transcripts. IWU does not ask for letters of recommendation, test scores or any other information.
Tuition and Financial Aid
Tuition for undergrads attending IWU starts at around $13,300 a semester or $26,600 a year. This covers the full cost of tuition and all its miscellaneous fees. Students taking more than 17 credit hours of classes in a semester will face a fee of $952 per credit hour. There are also fees of around $500 to $600 for those who want to take classes in the May semester or over the summer. Students in both the AS and the bachelor’s programs pay this same amount. Graduate students pay a set rate of $564 per credit hour.
Financial aid is available to undergrads and graduate students who submit the FAFSA, which is what the university uses to determine how much help each individual student needs. The university offers discounts for certain types of students too, including Indiana teachers, military students, and pastors. Some of those students may qualify for scholarships also. The average aid package will include both government grants and loans as well as one or more scholarships. Students can use their military benefits and employer tuition reimbursement and assistance programs also. Indiana Wesleyan University can assign students a counselor or advisor to help them complete the FAFSA and learn about financial aid before they apply to its accounting degree program.
