National American University is accredited overall by the Higher Learning Commission and has been granted the right to operate as a postsecondary educational institution by the Tennessee Higher Education Commission. National American University Application Requirements

National American University is an open enrollment institution, and as such requires only those items necessary for enrollment and expected academic success in a college setting. The first step in this process is filling out and submitting the online Student Application for Admission directly through the university website. Students must also provide proof of graduation from a recognized high school or equivalent or provide transcripts from an accredited higher education institution.

Because of the open enrollment format, all diploma and degree-seeking students are required to complete an academic success appraisal before being allowed to enroll in courses. This appraisal includes proof of having completed college-level English composition and Math courses or their equivalent, to include Advanced Placement courses taken in high school, appropriate scores on the CLEP examinations, previous college coursework, or appropriate scores on the ASVAB and subsequent acceptance into the military.

Students who are unable to meet these requirements may be denied immediate enrollment with NAU, but are instead guided toward an appropriate course of study that will allow them to meet the academic success appraisal requirements when they are ready to apply again. National American University reserves the right to refuse any submitted application for enrollment if documentation cannot be provided or verified to show a reasonable expectation of academic success in a postsecondary educational setting.

Tuition and Financial Aid

Courses at National American University are taken by quarters, with tuition assessed at a flat rate per quarter, dependent upon the number of course credits taken. Most courses earn 4.5 credit hours, so that students taking three or more courses per quarter are considered full-time and pay tuition at a flat rate of $5,000.00 per quarter, the rate that applies for 12 credit hours or more taken in a quarter. Students taking less than 12 credit hours are assessed tuition at rates of $1,900.00 per quarter if taking between one and five credit hours, $2,750.00 for six to eight credit hours, or $4,000.00 for nine to 11 credit hours. These are non-military tuition rates that apply to students in all programs except for the Nursing Clinical Core. Eligible military students pay tuition at a rate of $166.66 per credit hour, regardless of how many hours are taken per quarter.

Financial Aid is available for students who qualify. Students seeking financial aid should begin by filling out the online Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA, as soon as possible. Available aid options include scholarships, grants, student loans, and work-study programs. Federal aid generally includes grants, loans, and work-study programs arranged with NAU. Scholarships can be sought through a variety of organizations that the student may have access to or membership through, as well as through NAU itself.

In addition, students who are also working adults may be able to seek company tuition assistance through their place of employment. In most cases, this will take the form of tuition reimbursement, so students can choose to pay tuition upfront or can sign a promissory note with NAU and provide payment authorizations prior to the first day of class. Military students can also take advantage of military educational benefits and aid, administered through NAU’s College of Military Studies.
