About Northeastern University
In 1898, the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) in Boston began offering a lecture series, attended mostly by immigrants who were seeking self-improvement. The series grew in popularity and the YMCA began to offer career training, including law courses. The courses became so popular, the YMCA created the Department of Law. Additional programs were added and, in 1903, an automobile school opened, allowing women to enroll. The Evening Polytechnic School developed from these programs, providing training in architecture, navigation, surveying, math and more.
Courses were offered in the evening, providing flexibility for working adults. In 1909, the school began offering day courses as well and it became clear that the school had outgrown its location. Space was rented while they sought another location for the school and, in 1913, classes began on Huntington Avenue. The name of the school became Northeastern University of the Boston Young Men’s Christian Association in 1922.
When the Boston Red Sox moved to Fenway Park in 1929, the school purchased the old stadium although construction was delayed by the Great Depression until 1934. In 1937, the Northeastern University Corporation began and, in 1948, it separated completely from the YMCA.
Today, 93 percent of Northwestern graduates are employed full-time or in graduate school within nine months of graduation. Research revenue has increased 229 percent since 2006 and the school has been ranked in the top 50 by US News & World Report for six consecutive years.
