The degree paths in accounting and finance that Southern Utah University offers prepare students for entering the workforce and continue their training later. It offers an accounting program that provides students with the foundation they need to take professional licensing exams. More than 90% of the program’s graduates find employment in the accounting field within six months of finishing their degrees. With two additional semesters of study, students can complete graduate degrees in accounting after finishing the bachelor’s program too.
Students can also earn a bachelor’s degree in finance from Southern Utah University. One of the projects they do involves investing $150,000 to create a financial portfolio. The university asks students to monitor their investments over several semesters. Graduates score in and above the 90th percentile in the finance exam that they take. The Master of Accountancy (MAcc) program offered by Southern Utah University is available through the Dixie L. Leavitt School of Business. It started more than two decades ago and helps students finish the 150 hours of education they need to complete before they can take the national licensing exam for certified public accountants. Southern Utah University is a public university that originally catered to students in the southern region of the state but now accepts students from across the United States and several countries. Founded in 1893 as the Branch Normal School, it was one of the first normal schools in the west and offered only education and teacher prep tracks. It became the Branch Agricultural College in 1913 as its curriculum changed. The college would also use the names of the College of Southern Utah and Southern Utah State College before becoming Southern Utah University or SUU. SUU now offers programs in a range of liberal arts subjects and added several business and visual arts programs to its catalog. While SUU has a main campus in Cedar City, it also offers courses on satellite campuses that caused its overall enrollment to rise to more than 11,000 students.
Southern Utah University Accreditation Details
SUU has accreditation for its finance and accounting programs for undergrads and graduate students from the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP). It also holds regional accreditation, which is important for students who want to transfer to SUU or take credits from SUU when they enroll in another university. That accreditation comes from the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU). Regional accreditation is also important because it lets students demonstrate the need they have on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and get a financial aid program. SUU has accreditation for its design, art, education, engineering and technology programs too.
Southern Utah University Application Requirements
Undergrads applying to SUU need to submit both a transcript and a mid-year report. The university will use the grades shown on those documents and will not consider the end of the year grades that students receive unless they submit their final transcripts. Students can apply for an admissions review before applying to SUU to see if the university will accept them. They need to submit an online form and answer a few questions. Students also have the option of applying directly to SUU without going through a review. After they apply online, they need to make sure that SUU receives a standardized test score and a high school transcript.
Graduate students must also apply online. Those who want to enter the bridge program to fast track their accounting degrees will need to apply after taking all their required accounting classes. SUU charges a $60 application fee and has spots on the application where students can upload all their required documents. They need a bachelor’s degree and a history of taking business and accounting classes. SUU also asks for a letter of intent that explains the student’s reasons for choosing the program and a resume that lists any professional experiences they have. The accountancy program requires a GMAT or GRE score and three letters of recommendation. Students will need to take prerequisites from SUU if those courses aren’t shown on their transcripts, including Business Law, Marketing Principles, Managerial Finance, and Accounting Principles.
Tuition and Financial Aid
Students taking classes on the SUU main campus pay $513.75 for the first credit hours they take if they are also Utah residents. The cost changes as students take more credits and can climb to $3,384.75 for students taking 15 credit hours. Nonresidents who take the same number of classes will pay $10,292.75 each semester. SUU freezes this tuition rate and allows students to take up to 18 credit hours for the same amount. Undergrads who want to take online classes will pay $300 per credit hour. The accountancy program offers resident and nonresident rates too. Residents pay $4,527.75 to take nine credits, while nonresidents pay $12,377.75 to take the same number of credits.
The Department of Financial Aid at SUU offers financial aid packages to students once it gets the completed FAFSA. There is a priority financial aid deadline of December first and a final deadline of March first, which is also the last deadline for students seeking scholarships. Students with a GPA of 3.0 or higher can qualify for an academic scholarship. They can also renew their scholarships if they maintain a GPA of 2.0 or higher. Graduate students can qualify for loans, work-study, and scholarships. Those in the MAcc program who take at least nine credit hours can get a tuition waiver that lets nonresidents pay the same rates as residents. The university offers a scholarship for graduate students who need help paying their housing costs too.
