Strayer University Accreditation Details
With its headquarters in Washington, DC, Strayer University falls in the region of the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE). The institution first received accreditation in 1981 and was last re-certified during the 2017/2018 year. This process verifies that the school provides a quality education and operates using responsible and transparent business practices. Specifically, the MSCHE review encompasses seven designated categories of the university as a whole including Support of the Student Experience, Educational Effectiveness Assessment, and Ethics and Integrity. In addition, the associate, bachelor’s, and master’s level business programs at Strayer are accredited by the ACBSP, or the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs. This organization developed standards for business and accounting education based on current practices in the field and input from industry leaders. After meeting the standards first in 2013, the university received this specialized program accreditation.
Strayer University Application Requirements
All applicants to Strayer University must first complete a basic application on the school’s website and they will be directed to provide supplemental materials depending on the chosen program. For those pursuing a master’s in accounting, the primary requirement is the completion of a bachelor’s degree with at least a 2.5 GPA, preferably in accounting or a related field. All prospective students must submit official transcripts from every post-secondary school attended along with a resume and a scanned copy of a government-issued photo identification card. Strayer University reviews each candidate, specifically predicting his or her likelihood of success in the program. In order to do this, they look for markers of graduation potential. These include completion of three graduate-level courses with at least a 3.0 GPA or completion of an Advanced Professional Military Education program, a GRE score greater than 1000 or a GMAT score of at least 450, and at least three years of verifiable professional employment in a management or leadership position. While not all of these metrics are necessary, at least one is required for admission to the accounting graduate programs. If there is a question about an applicant’s readiness for the program, he or she may be invited to an interview with one of the deans.
Tuition and Financial Aid
The graduate accounting program at Strayer University costs $1665 per course which equates to roughly $20,000 for the entire program for all students regardless of state residency status or online versus on-campus attendance. Many students receive some type of financial assistance in the form of subsidized student loans, state grants, military programs, or accounting-related scholarships from outside organizations.
