Online Accounting Program
Troy University offers a bachelor’s program for accounting majors that has several concentrations attached. Online students can enroll in a version of the program with a concentration in management accounting. They learn how to manage others when working in an accounting or finance department and how to lead small groups. Students must take two electives that can include Investments and Financial Statement Analysis. They can work with their advisors to determine the other electives they should take based on their career goals.
Unlike other online programs that provide students with few chances to interact with their professors and peers, the Troy program features video lectures that students can watch on their own time and discussion boards that let them interact with others. They typically write an essay on the discussion board each week and then respond to the essays that other students posted. Each course also features weekly readings and assignments that students must do.
To complete the management concentration, students must take four classes, including Introduction to Taxation and Internal Auditing. They’ll also take Managerial Accounting I and Managerial Accounting II. This second course serves as a capstone and asks students to do a final project based on a subject addressed in that class. Troy encourages students to take online classes from some of the other concentrations and disciplines to learn more about related business topics such as finance and marketing. Online accounting majors must take some business prerequisites before they can take any advanced business or accounting classes at the 300 level or higher.
About Troy University
Located in the Alabama city of the same name, Troy University is a public university that started life as a normal school. Established as the Troy State Normal School in 1887, it opened as a part of the Alabama State University System. A large number of teachers working in and around Troy at the turn of the century graduated from this school. Troy later changed its curriculum to include programs other than just teaching, which led to it becoming Troy University in 1967. The university now operates a main campus in Troy as well as smaller campuses in and around the state and some overseas. The main campus in the Troy University system is unique because it’s home to both a golf course and a large park. That course ranks as one of the state’s top golf courses, while the park is open to both students and the general public. Including both online and traditional students, Troy has an enrollment of more than 18,000 students.
Troy University Accreditation Details
Troy University has all the accreditation that prospective students should look for when selecting a college. It has the regional accreditation that allows students of all types and levels to apply for financial aid, which comes from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) and its Commission on Colleges (COC). Students will find that this type of accreditation also gives them the chance to transfer credits into a degree program that they earned from another school. The university also has specialty accreditation from a variety of organizations.
Troy University Application Requirements
Troy University believes that students are more than just a single test score, which is why it requires more information from each prospective student. Students must submit official transcripts as well as test scores. Those who have a grade point average of at least 2.0 and a score of at least 20 on the ACT will receive unconditional acceptance. The university will also accept an SAT score of 1030 or higher in lieu of an ACT score. Those who have the same ACT or SAT score and a lower GPA may receive conditional acceptance. These students must take introductory courses and receive high grades to remain in the university.
Applying to the university is easy because of its online application. There is a $30 fee that the student will pay before choosing to submit it. The application allows students to create their own unique accounts and complete their work over several days or weeks. Students must use caution when filling out this form because it asks them which campus they want to attend. If they choose a traditional campus, that campus will process the application. Online students must select the online option when working on the application.
Tuition and Financial Aid
Though Troy University charges a separate resident and nonresident tuition rate, all online students pay the same amount. Those students pay $338 per credit hour for any course taken at the undergrad level. The university offers a Troy Military and Family Scholarship for any military student on active duty status and their families. This reduces their costs down to $250 per credit hour for online undergrad programs. Other types of students can apply for scholarships too.
Those students can go online and create an account on the university’s scholarship website. They can then view all the scholarships that are currently available and view the requirements of each one. If they find a scholarship they qualify for, they can use the site to apply. There are some scholarships designed for continuing students that allow them to get more money each year. Students may need to have a GPA of 3.0 or higher or agree to take at least 12 credits of classes each semester. The university offers scholarships that award students up to $10,000 every year.
Students can also apply for federal financial aid via the FAFSA, which will also determine if they receive any state aid too. State and federal aid can include certain types of grants and some loans. Undergrads receive subsidized student loans that help them avoid interest building up on the money they borrow. The government offers PLUS loans for the parents of currently enrolled or future college students too. Troy University has financial aid counselors available who can help students fill out the FAFSA and offer assistance as they apply for scholarships.
